These here...

bl1.jpgbl2.jpgbl3.jpg

Mary & I thinking are about using our free plane tickets to take a weekend trip to SF to see the Beautiful Losers show at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. I was hoping to see it at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati but no such luck. If you try to look at YBCA site, use Explorer or something besides Safari, which doesn't like it. If you insist on Safari, check out the CAC site for more info on the show & the artists.

There's a new version of OS X coming out. It's called Tiger. This is probably old news.

Coudal has remodeled & it looks great. And Coudal affiliates Slowtron finally finished Western State #4 featuring Jason Gneikow, designer & Promise Ring guitarist.

Out to Lunch

Wow, I missed a whole week. Here's where the apologies go. Here's where I say they'll be more to come later. Now on to what I was doing.

Mary & I went to Boston for a few days to find an apartment. It ended up being the first one and, in addition to being the nicest place I've ever had, it's also the most expensive. French doors, porches, a pantry, wood trim, a hutch, and there's pizza nearby. It's pretty sweet. We stayed in Providence with Mary's brother Lenny, helped make a music video, saw Fahrenheit 9/11 at the mall, saw a place in the food court that had a "Steak Bomb", watched Freaks & Geeks, saw Tony Hawk coming into a hotel (some girl was carrying his skateboard!), ate too many hamburgers, availed myself of the nation's cellular phone network quite a few times, flew home through Charlotte (I know it doesn't make sense), spent the night at the Hilton there for a free ticket, rode first class & managed to not finish any of the NY Times crosswords that I started. Quite eventful.

We will return to our regularly scheduled links soon.

Damn

This morning I realized that I had missplaced my cellphone & I was more angry than I've been in a long time. I think part of it was because I absolutely loathe losing things. Especially things that cost money I don't have. The idea of having to lay out $100 for a new phone days before I have to use every cent I can scrape together to rent a new apartment in a city 1800 miles away drove me to near-violence. The other part of it was realizing that I had become highly dependent on that stupid phone. I gave the number to one of the deans at MassArt, to the realtor in Boston who's going to show us apartments, to everyone. And now they can't call me. What a giant pain in the ass. Then Matt called to tell me that he found the phone in his van. Damn.

Trailer Park

gardenstate.jpg

- Garden State, written, directed & starring Zach Braff from Scrubs (!?) plus Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard & Ian Holm. The trailer has a Postal Service song in it.
- This summer's Dude, Where's My Car?, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.
- A movie-myth finally makes it to the screen, Alien Vs. Predator or AVP as they call it.
- Keanu Reeves will probably ruin the Hellblazer movie, Constantine.
- And if you haven't already seen the trailer, Fahrenheit 9/11. Did anyone see Michael Moore on NBC Nightly News or whatever news show is on later? Matt Lauer tried to come off as a serious, hard hitting journalist & he just seemed like a dick. His report was so slanted in the opposite direction from Moore's that it was uncomfortable & hilarious at the same time. And just when it would start to get good, like when Moore started to explain how some of the media, implying NBC & Lauer, hold hands with the Bush Administration, they cut back to some footage with Lauer's ill informed voiceover.

More: Short piece on Moore in the NY Times.

Mike Slack, Jason Fulford & the Battles

3change.jpg

Mike Slack shoots polaroids. Lots & lots of them. There's a decent interview with him here. He put out a great book called OK OK OK on J & L Books which is run in part by another good photographer, Jason Fulford. Jason's pictures are featured on the sleeves of the recent Battles EPs. The Battles are Ian Williams' (Don Cab/Storm & Stress) new band with Tyondai Braxton (Anthony's son), John Stanier (Helmet/Tomahawk) & Dave Konopka (Lynx). They're playing at the Open End Gallery tonight but we are going to stay home & eat chicken.

You Got Served, Again

I was tempted to wake Mary up last night to tell her that they're making a sequel to You Got Served but I thought she'd be pissed because she had to get with the birds to go to work. Of course, we are excited.

ahem

Things learned from this short interview with David Sedaris: 1. There was going to be a Me Talk Pretty One Day movie directed by Wayne Wang until he, David, called it off & 2. He's never seen the internet. Link poached from Kottke

From the NY Times Magazine

stolfa.jpg

They ran a contest for college photographers & Sarah Stolfa (she was in the Delta 72 & is finishing up art school late like me, weird) won with her series called "Regulars". There were also two runners-up.

I hope Anchorman is as weird & funny as Will Ferrell & Co's video for the Starland Vocal Band's hit from 1976.

on the digital video disc

In the last 48 hours I have watched Stoked, the DC Video, Citizen Ruth, several episodes of the sadly departed Playmakers & Dirty Old Town. All good, all worth watching, depending on your mood. If you are fan of Bjork and/or Matmos, whichever live dvd is from that tour is also really, really good.

Oddly soothing

miles.jpg creature.jpg

I've been really into Black Dice's Miles of Smiles EP (left, above) lately. It makes the El ride a totally different aural experience. Their new full-length Creature Comforts (right, above) comes out in a week or two.

Rainout

Skate session gets rained out by less than 10 mins. of rain. What a bummer. From dry to slick in no time.
