Act like you know.

I may have forgotten how to use Photoshop I think.

or maybe it's that I've forgotten how to use the camera box machine thing. And yes, I cropped the photo of the bed on top. I'm over it, purists.

Promises

Empty promises.

This place has everything.

Somebody made a movie about Edward Burtynsky.

And in unrelated news, I brought some film to the lab today for the first time in a long time. I am not promising anything.

These are going out today.

(The color balance is weird for this picture, isn't it? Wasn't this sort or cool, bluish tone in vogue recently? I'm out of the loop.)

In the continuing dribbling in of things I thought were brilliant last year (dribbrilliant?!), I'd like to mention that Mastodon record that came out, Blood Mountain. In a word: Heavy (or Heaviness, I can't decide). Check out the Lost-y video for Colony of Birches here (the animation morphs at the end are my favorite part) & play the Blood Mountain game here.

If I said I was sorry, would you believe me?

Concern yourself with this: You can download a full-length collaboration between Talib Kweli & Madlib from the Stones Throw website for free.

That was funny. Did you hear that?

Went to Brian Ulrich's opening this evening. Judging by the difference in temperature between inside the gallery & outside, I'd say that there were a ton of people there. (Uh, also with my own eyes I saw a ton of people.) Like almost too many people to get to say hi to him. Ran into two ex-Chicagoans, Kerri Skarbakka & Ben Pier, fine gentlemen both.

Oh, I also saw Brian Dettmer's show at Art & Idea. Grrreat.

You're my choice, baby!

On the way back from the Post Office this morning (closed because of Gerald Ford's passing?! Who knew?) I was thinking about another record that I really liked this year. The Destroyer lp, Destroyer's Rubies (or Rubies, I'm never sure) was listened to quite a whole lot at a critical juncture in my thesis show process. Also, the Boris record Pink dropped on my head unexpectedly, as did a copy of Lou Courtney's "Hey Joyce" which was the topmost 45 on a stack of Sesame Street christmas songs at the thrift store with no prices down the street. That sort of thing, the sort where the record is just waiting for you right there & it's the one (or one of the ones) you've been looking for & it costs, like, 50 cents, all that's missing is the rays of heavenly light, that sort of thing never happens to me. Most of the best 45s in my box were handed to me at any number of random shops in the Midwest by either Scott or Courtland ("you should get this"). Since one of those people sells tons of reggae lps from a shack in Hawaii these days & the other is back home in Chicago, raising little Opal right, I'm on my own. Smiles for miles people, smiles for miles.

Resolutions in action

chicagoday.jpg

Remember when I used to update this everyday? Oh, that's right.

This picture is from several years ago. I don't think you've seen it. I made it with a camera that someone stole from me (after I took the picture). Did you like the Bonnie Prince Billy vs. Tortoise covers record? I did. That came out last year. Some other good stuff happened, too. If you'd like for me to come to the Manhattan or Brooklyn-area bar that you own or manage & play records that people would enjoy listening to, I'd be very happy to. Yes, I am aware of the too small amount of care taken in constructing the previous sentence.

I'm not drunk, even though it seems like it.
